My Grandma Homer

I am blessed with two wonderful grandmothers, but for the sake of this entry, I am going to focus on one of them—Grandma Homer.

I'm really not sure where to begin.
She was born Verda Adams in Utah and became a Homer when she married my grandpa. She has beautiful, bright red hair and was quite a gal, full of passion and conviction. She would go to blue and white dances in the Salt Lake area and use a different name at each dance, so when boys came calling, she could remember where she met them. Sometimes she would have one coming in as the other came out. My grandpa remembers going over there to talk about his feelings for her, and she was getting ready to go on a date with another guy. :)

She was a very spunky miss as well. She was brave and slept out on the range with the cattle when necessary. (She grew up on a ranch.) She knew how to kill a snake with a sling shot. I think that's pretty impressive.
She raised my mother and five boys. All served church missions, and three served in the military as well. When I think of my grandmother I think of home. I have moved many, many times, but she and Grandpa have been in their current house since my mom was in high school. They built it, and it has always been a home to all their family members.

There are some things you can always count on when you visit Grandma. There will be lots of yummy homemade meals with ingredients from her garden, and you will be served a little cup of vitamins with your meal.

Along with gardening and canning, Grandma also loved doing genealogy, being with her family, and quilting. There probably are other things, too. :) Those are just the ones that always stuck out to me. She's a very shy lady, but she's completely open and loving to those she knows.
When Jeff and I were visiting her and Grandpa this past Christmas, I got to see a side of her I hadn't seen in a while. My grandpa had a bottle of root beer out on the kitchen table. He went to get it, and it was all gone. He asked what had happened, and my grandmother shook her hips a little (did a little dance) and told him that she drank it! It's possible you had to be there to really enjoy it (or just have to know her), but it was pretty wonderful. Everyone laughed. :)

Grandma Homer has a strong testimony and has always been strong in the gospel. She passed this down to her daughter (my mother) who passed it on to me. She has been in the hospital since the day I gave birth to little Jill, and the doctors today pronounced that she only has 24 to 48 hours left. As much as I and everyone in my family will miss her, I know that she is tired, in pain, and ready to go home.

I am so grateful for the testimony that she has shared that led to me being raised in the church. I take comfort knowing that I will see her again someday. Someday I'll have my spunky, fun grandma back again.
